Top 5 Fried Chicken Bento Boxes from Japan’s FamilyMart

FamilyMart is the fried chicken king of Japan’s convenience stores, so it’s no wonder they have so many fried chicken bentos to choose from!

5. Fried Chicken

Nice and simple, the fried chicken bento features cuts of chicken katsu with a generous squeeze of creamy kewpie mayo. Alongside this is a bed of steamed rice with black sesame seed seasoning and a serving of plain spaghetti pasta. You also get a small helping of pickled radish on the side, and all for less than 500 yen!

4. Teriyaki Chicken

This next one is the same katsu chicken as the previous bento, but instead of kewpie mayo, it comes with a rich teriyaki sauce for a stronger flavor hit. What I like about this one is the way the sauce softens up the chicken and makes it a more moist texture. The teriyaki sauce is also good with the rice as it gives it a nice flavor and makes for a more exciting experience than just bland rice with a plum on top.

3. Famichiki Tartar Sauce Chicken

Famichiki has become a global sensation among Japan enthusiasts and foreign tourists for its juicy fried chicken offerings at the FamilyMart deli section. A limited edition item, the Famichiki Tartar Sauce bento box, features that very chicken combined with a generous serving of creamy tartar sauce atop a bed of steamed rice. You may think, “What’s the difference between Famichiki and the regular katsu used in their standard bentos?” and the answer is “a lot.” The juiciness and spices of the Famichiki separate it from typical chicken katsu, and that’s what makes this otherwise regular bento box a rather special one!

2. Fried Chicken & Fried Rice

That being said, the Famichiki bento is still a little on the boring side as a whole package, and that’s because they lack an exciting element where the rice is concerned. This fried chicken and fried rice bento changes the whole game! Instead of plain tasteless rice, you get the moist succulence of fried rice with small chopped green onions and minced egg in the mix. This one also comes with spaghetti serving like the very first item on this list, and also some unique yellow and green pickled vegetables.

1. Fried Chicken & Tartar Sauce

Saving the best for last, the fried chicken and tartar sauce bento is truly the most flawless of all FamilyMart bentos. This bad boy has both the rich potency of teriyaki sauce and the creamy indulgence of tartar sauce flavoring up those fried chicken cutlets. You may not believe it, but it does, in fact, come with rice too, despite it being nowhere to be seen in this picture. That’s because the rice is covered by a serving of tasty chicken mince, smooth scrambled egg, and some kind of green pickled vegetable that I can’t quite identify, but has a bit of a spicy kick to it! Indeed, the fried chicken and tartar sauce bento is the king of all bentos at FamilyMart, perhaps even all convenience stores in Japan!
